Director, Valerie Foster, explains how her charity has benefited from Pilotlight

What does the charity do?

Bromley Y is a charity offering free, confidential counselling to young people between the ages of 11 and 23 within the borough of Bromley in south London. It is staffed by trained counsellors, administrators, and volunteers who aim to provide the highest quality, non-discriminatory service for young people and their families who, live, study or work in Bromley.

Why and how did it start?

The charity began 45 years ago as a result of concerns about some difficult social issues experienced by young people in Bromley town centre.

By expanding our services throughout the borough, we are opening up opportunities for more young people to access our services.

Why did the charity decide to start working with Pilotlight?

We felt that as an organisation we were thriving operationally but could benefit further from the strategic thinking that the business sector could bring.

What did your work with Pilotlight involve?

It involved monthly meetings (where much homework was meted out!) which eventually led to the creation of a five-year strategic plan.

How has the charity benefited from working with Pilotlight?

We now have an increased confidence in our strategic skills evidenced by the very real creation of a strategic plan.

What lessons have you learned from the experience?

Many, but perhaps the most important is that management of time is of equal importance to actually delivering counselling to our clients.

What impact has your work with Pilotlight had on your clients?

By expanding our services throughout the borough, we are opening up opportunities for more young people to access our services.

What do your clients say about their experience?

“It has given me a lot more direction in life, provided me with a lot of insight into myself and others. I cope with these things easier."

What would you say to other charities thinking about working with Pilotlight?

Lucky them! It is an exhilarating experience, with lots of hard work, but definitely worth the effort.
