Linklaters & Size of Wales
Strengthening fundraising foundations through global collaboration.
About the project
Size of Wales is a Welsh climate charity working towards a world where people and biodiverse forests thrive. It is campaigning for Wales to become the first Deforestation Free Nation.
Alongside its education, community outreach, and policy work, the Deforestation Free Business Champion initiative encourages businesses across Wales to audit and eliminate forest-risk commodities from their supply chains
The challenge
With growing pressure on governments, companies, and individuals to take meaningful climate action, Size of Wales identified an important opportunity to strengthen its corporate partnerships and build sustainable income.
A global collaboration 🌍
As part of Pilotlight’s Direction programme, a team from Linklaters was drawn from across the UK, USA, and the EU.
Working closely with the Size of Wales leadership team, and supported by a Pilotlight Project Manager, the group explored practical ways to strengthen the charity’s corporate engagement, due diligence, and internal capacity.
Key outcomes
For Size of Wales
The Linklaters team produced a set of actionable recommendations for the charity, including:
-
A clear pathway for establishing a dedicated corporate fundraising function.
-
A robust and streamlined due diligence process, with clear risk assessment tiers and defined expectations for partnership levels.
-
Tactical steps for improving corporate engagement, leveraging networks, partnership materials, and onboarding tools.
-
Options for developing the Deforestation Free Business initiative, looking at how it is positioned and packaged for different organisations.
“It was incredibly helpful to have an external team take a detailed and focused look at our work.
They helped us identify the challenges that need our attention most and offered a valuable mix of creative ideas and clear practical suggestions.”
- Nicola Pulman, CEO, Size of Wales
For Linklaters
As well as demonstrating a commitment to climate action and sustainability, the Linklaters team members joined this project as a chance to apply their skills to a real-world challenge.“As an executive board member of a local nonprofit in the Bronx, New York, this experience has been eye-opening.
"Seeing nonprofits across the world face similar challenges sparked ideas I can bring back to support our own work. It also allowed me to contribute to a meaningful cause while building and strengthening my network at the firm.”

Mutual learning
This collaboration shows the value of cross-sector partnerships, with Size of Wales leaving the programme with clarity, structure, and renewed momentum, and Linklaters contributing to meaningful climate action through focused strategic support.
