“Becoming a Trustee” Event

9 December 2008

Two dozen London Pilotlighters joined us for an experimental evening at Schroders on the 12th November entitled “Becoming a Trustee.” The objective of the event was to provide an introduction to the benefits and challenges of becoming a trustee, and to test whether Pilotlighters would be interested in further events on the subject of governance.

The event was facilitated by Pilotlighter Bob Mannering from Organisation Solutions, and featured three speakers talking about their experiences of being, or working with, trustees: Chief Executive of voluntary sector recruitment company ProspectUs Ltd and multiple trustee David Gold; Founder Director of Pilotlight partner charity JusB Rachel Archer; and Pilotlight Trustee and Founder Director of veterinary chain Pet Doctors, Garret Turley. Pilotlight Chief Executive, Fiona Halton, opened the evening with a case for the importance of good governance in small charities.

Participant feedback and a 100% turnout demonstrated that the evening was well-received and there is an appetite for more discussion and advice on the subject of being an effective trustee, like Rachel’s memorable “6 T’s for Tip-Top Trustees:” Time, Talent, Tact, Thoroughness, Tirelessness and Treasure. We will apply the lessons from the evening to design events on the subject next year.

Our thanks to participating Pilotlighters for their time and feedback, and much gratitude to our three excellent speakers, Bob for facilitating, Jonathan Levy for sponsoring the team’s time in devising and running the event and Schroders for the generous donation of their conference room and drinks and canapés. Details of the resulting events will follow in the New Year.
